At the Vienna International Center, November 22 – 24, 2017, the First Regional Conference on Sustainable Industrial Development “Promoting Sustainable Energy Solutions and Clean Technologies in the CIS Countries” was held.
The conference was organized by the Department of Europe and Central Asia of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of the authorities of the Russian Federation. The aim of the event was to promote sustainable industrialization in the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Strategies, tools and models for promoting environmentally friendly industries, resource-efficient and modern production processes, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by safe technologies were discussed. The conference participants presented their national experience and business models for the introduction of “green” technologies and sustainable, cost-effective innovative solutions in the industry.
Speaking at the opening, the Director General of UNIDO, Li Yong, noted the importance of the renewal of sustainable energy solutions and environmentally progressive technologies everywhere to achieve the goals of the World Development Agenda until 2030 and the Paris Agreement on Environment. UNIDO offers numerous technical cooperation projects and programs in the CIS region to make the industries economically more sustainable, efficient and profitable. Simultaneously with the conference, it was an exhibition of companies that demonstrated modern technologies in the field of solutions of the problems of sustainable energy and environmentally friendly production.
More than 80 representatives from a number of countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan participated in the conference. From ICIE took part: the Honorary President Victor Glukhikh and expert Egor Gorbatenko.
During the bilateral meetings of the ICIE delegation with the UNIDO managers and the leadership, represented by the Director General Mr. Li Yong, the possible further directions of joint work of the two organizations and proposals for the meeting at the leadership level of UNIDO and the Congress in early 2018 were discussed.
